ST. LOUIS—On Wednesday, the American Optometric Association (AOA) announced that it is asking the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to look into what it said are possible Eyeglass Rule infractions by Eyebot, developer of automated vision testing technology, and 1-800 Contacts, with which Eyebot announced a partnership earlier this year. AOA concerns stem from what it said is an automated kiosk in a Utah mall with 1-800-Contacts branding featuring marketing language that offers “free glasses prescriptions.” This language, the AOA said, “raises significant concerns regarding compliance” with the Eyeglass Rule, known officially as Ophthalmic Practice Rules, which establish a set of requirements around providing ophthalmology and optometry patients with a free copy of their prescription immediately following a refractive eye exam.
