As America’s population ages, dementia is becoming an increasingly urgent public health concern. More than 6 million people in the U.S. are living with the condition, and researchers estimate that 42 percent of Americans over age 55 will eventually develop dementia, according to the National Institutes of Health. But dementia affects more than memory and cognition, with experts noting that it can also impact vision, and that, in some cases, vision impairment may even contribute to the risk of developing dementia. Karen Michaelson, ABOC, founder of Kare Consulting LLC and Eyes on Dementia is working to help ECPs better understand the dementia-vision loss connection.
