Recent studies have shown a connection between the gut microbiome, a community of microorganisms, and specific eye conditions, such as ocular surface diseases, retinal disorders, and immune-mediated eye diseases. Gut microbes may influence these conditions by regulating the immune system or altering metabolites. They play a crucial role in maintaining the integrity of the intestinal barrier, influencing host nutrient metabolism, participating in immune regulation, and combating pathogens. Reduced variety and balance in the gut microbiome can pave the way for one type of microorganism to take over, making us more vulnerable to inflammation and infections from germs living inside and outside of our bodies.
