A profound awareness surrounding the myopia crisis is front and center for eye care providers around the globe. Initially projected rising prevalence figures will likely be shattered as significant, unexpected increases in myopia incidence after the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic have been observed, particularly in East Asia, possibly due to strict regulations requiring children to stay indoors and receive remote education. However, the role of the visual environment on the development and/or progression of myopia remains elusive, fueling the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to form a myopia focus committee and call on “eye care professionals, federal agencies, and funding agencies to make improvements to standardize care, increase funding to study treatments, encourage outdoor time, and overall facilitate the standardization of assessments and diagnostics.”
