The American Academy of Ophthalmology Code of Ethics consists of a delineation of aspirational ethical principles, 18 enforceable rules, and administrative procedures for addressing possible lapses of these rules.1 At the time of annual membership renewal, all Fellows and Members of the Academy agree to comply with the mandatory and descriptive standards of professional conduct outlined in the rules of the Code. The Code emphasizes the ophthalmologist’s responsibility to always act in the best interests of patients, providing them with competent and compassionate care consistent with the principles and rules.
