Unemployment rates were little changed in March across all 50 states and the District of Columbia, according to the latest data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Fourteen states had jobless rate increases from a year earlier, while two states had decreases, and 34 states and D.C. had little change. The report reveals the national unemployment rate remains around 4.3 percent, with little change over the month or compared with March 2025.In March 2026, nonfarm payroll employment increased in three states and was unchanged in 47 states and the District of Columbia. Employment increased in Texas (up 46,800, or 0.3 percent), Florida (up 28,100, or 0.3 percent) and Tennessee (up 12,100, or 0.4 percent). Over the year, nonfarm payroll employment decreased in three states and D.C., increased in three states and was essentially unchanged in 44 states. Employment decreased in Maryland (down 49,900, or 1.8 percent), D.C. (down 40,300, or 5.3 percent), Oregon (down 21,900, or 1.1 percent) and Iowa (down 20,700, or 1.3 percent). Job gains occurred in California (up 144,700, or 0.8 percent), Texas (up 117,200, or 0.8 percent) and Nevada (up 28,700, or 1.8 percent).
