ALEXANDRIA, Va.—The Vision Council announced this week that Omar Elkhatib, director of government relations, testified on behalf of the group and its members on May 5 at a public hearing held at the U.S. International Trade Commission in Washington, D.C., as part of a multi-day review of whether structural excess capacity in manufacturing abroad is harming U.S. production. During his testimony, he urged the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) to exclude eyewear and related optical products from possible tariff actions stemming from a sweeping set of Section 301 investigations, saying added duties would raise costs, weaken domestic competitiveness and reduce access to essential vision care.
