The National Eye Institute (NEI) has issued a Request for Information (RFI) as it begins developing its strategic plan for 2026 through 2031, inviting feedback from across the vision research and healthcare communities. The institute is calling on a wide range of stakeholders—including clinicians, researchers, professional societies, and patient advocates—to help shape priorities that will guide federal investments in vision science over the next five years. NEI is specifically seeking input across four core areas: foundational science, translational science, clinical and population science, and training and metascience. The agency is also encouraging respondents to highlight emerging scientific and technological advances, identify gaps and opportunities in current research, and suggest ways to align vision science with broader National Institutes of Health (NIH) priorities. These broader priorities include the integration of artificial intelligence, the use of real-world data, efforts to address health disparities, and the adoption of innovative research methodologies. According to NEI, responses will be used solely for planning purposes and will help inform the institute’s strategic direction as it works to advance treatments and prevention strategies for eye diseases and vision disorders. Participation in the RFI is voluntary, and submissions will be accepted through April 15, 2026. Stakeholders can review the full RFI and submit their feedback through the official online form.
